catcher in the rye???
i have two questions im about half way thru the book.
why does holden think about why hes a coward?
and.. why does he get beat up.. why doenst he sue?
Holden doesn't exactly have the greatest self-esteem, so he's constantly criticizing himself as well as most everything and everybody around him. He's more passive than aggressive, so he translates that as being a coward.
He doesn't think about suing because the book takes place in 1949, long before people thought about suing everyone for every little injustice. These are just kids. Holden got punched out by Stradlater, felt he deserved it, and moved on. You're thinking about it in today's terms, and you can't do that with a novel this old.
