How can I stain wood and get it to look smooth with a contemporary/modern look. Is there a special process?
Is there some type of stain mixture that is made so the grain of the wood is not seen, a good example of this is with most modern bookselves, I like the smooth finish look. I want to learn how to do it myself because I love to learn. Thanks
I actually just finished two bookshelves in the manner your are talking about. Most of my existing furniture has a vary dark almost black wood veneer. To achieve this look and solid oak was two step process.
Fist step was to stain the wood with a tradition oil based stain. I use Minwax but any brand would be fine. This ould give the wood a red undertone after i did step two.
Step two was to take an oil based paint and thin it down with a product called Penetrol. This is a paint conditioner/thinner. it reduces viscosity without breaking the paint down.
I added enough till the consistency was little thicker than heavy cream and then brushed it on in a very thin layer. this seamed to do the job.
The last thing I did was finished it with a brushing lacquer.
When you are adding the Penetrol to the paint mix up a small amount and test it out before you start. Play around with the ratios until you get it to where you want it to be.
