The decline of art during the middle ages....plz help!!?
What are some of the reasons for the decline in the quality of art during the middle ages? I noticed that some of the friezes from the height of the Roman Empire are remarkably detailed, yet, during the later Middle Ages, the art is flat, 2-dimensional, almost cartoonish. It flourishes again during the Rennaisance, but I can't find any concrete reason (maybe there isn't one). My friend suggested that maybe patrons spent too much on churches and missions during Christianity's uprise and ignored artists, but that seems like a shaky explanation at best. Any thoughts?
Piety was one reason.
Endemic warfare and plague played a more pragmatic role. A lack of education, cultural unity, and the ruins of Rome (and their inability to reproduce Rome's greatness) greatly depressed any sort of creativity that might have happened.
