How can I get my two dogs to get along with each other?
I have Nia (a pit bull that I've had since she was born) and now I have a puppy that someone abandoned (he's also a pit bull). Nia is 1 year and 6 months and the puppy is about 6 months. Nia is being really mean and keeps wanting to fight with the other dog. I haven't raised her that way she's just really angry that we're keeping the dog. I want to evenually bred the two dogs but I need them to get along. The puppy loves Nia but she won't let him near her! HELP!
Ugh, here we go again with the breeding.
Why would you breed a dog with an unknown background?
For all you know, this abandoned puppy comes from a line of tenacious fighters and the whole litter would be aggressive? Just because a particular dog is sweet, does not mean the puppies will be. You have to take the whole line into consideration to get a predictable outcome.
Please reconsider breeding your dogs.
As for fighting, your older dog is fighting over territory and is establishing herself as the boss. You need to establish yourself as the boss and quickly. Anytime she goes to fight with the puppy, give a correction with a stern NO, and put yourself between her and the puppy.
If you see her ears going forward and her eyes are fixed, that is a sign she is going to fight, and that is the best time to give the correction.
